Leopards and Birdsong: A Monsoon Weekend at Jhalana Leopard Reserve

Monsoon is a time for rejuvenation in the Indian wilderness, and Jhalana Leopard Reserve, located just outside Jaipur, becomes a lush paradise that is an easy escape for those from Jaipur or Delhi. This past weekend, I had the opportunity to explore Jhalana with the help of an expert naturalist from Asian Adventures.

Jhalana Safari

Our first day began with an early morning safari. As we ventured into the forests of Jhalana, the woods buzzed with life. Peacocks danced on the wet ground, lapwings ran around in the grass, and langurs called out from the trees.

And then, the moment of discovery! There it was - a beautiful leopard, lying in the undergrowth. Whether it was taking shelter from the rain, resting after a good meal, or just having a lazy lie-down, the thrill of spotting this magnificent predator, even in its most docile of poses, was indescribable. For a few breathless moments, we watched before it rose and disappeared into the dense foliage.

The following day, we set out for another safari. However, with the sun out, we decided to look for and photograph some of Jhalana’s amazing birdlife. Apart from its leopards, Jhalana is also a haven for birds and birdwatchers alike. The monsoon had attracted a variety of species, their vibrant plumage standing out against the green backdrop.

We spotted an array of birds—from the colorful Indian Pitta to the majestic Jacobin Cuckoo, perched high on a branch. The melodic songs of the bulbuls filled the air, creating a natural symphony that was both calming and invigorating. We also spotted a shy little Spotted Owlet, taking cover from the drizzling rain in a small tree, and a sleepy nightjar resting before its night of insect hunting.

The rain adds a special charm to Jhalana, and breathes new life into the forest, making it an ideal time for nature lovers. Even if it may be hard to spot anything, the lush foliage makes it a relaxing nature-filled escape for nature lovers.

As I left Jhalana, the memories of that monsoon weekend stayed with me—memories of a leopard’s gaze, the chorus of birds, and the rain-soaked beauty of a forest teeming with life. Whether you’re a wildlife enthusiast or simply looking for a peaceful retreat, a monsoon visit to Jhalana promises an experience that is as enriching as it is unforgettable.
